Warming up and reading

Teaching objectives:

1. Get students to know what life will be like in the future from different aspects;

2. Get students to learn some new words and expressions;

3. Get students to improve their reading abilities, including skimming, scanning and summarizing.

Step 1: Lead-in

1. Ask students two questions: A. Have you ever imagined what life will be like in the future? B. Will life change for better or worse in the following four aspects, transport, houses, communication and environment.

2. Show students some pictures about transport, houses, communication and environment in the past, at present and in the future, then ask students to think about whether the life in the future will change for better or worse in the above four aspects.

3. Show students a short video clip about life in the future and ask students to use some adjectives to describe the life showed in the video.

Fast, efficient, convenient, comfortable...

Step 2: While-reading

Task 1: Skimming

a. What is the main idea of the text?

Task 1: Read paragraph 1 and answer the following seven questions.

(5) How did he overcome the difficulty?

(6) Where is he now?

Task 2: Read paragraph 2 and fill in the blanks.

Task 3: Read paragraph 3 and answer the following two questions.

2. What was the green wall made of? What’s the purpose of building this kind of green wall?

1. Wang Ping’s house is strange-looking and the room is large and bright. We can see a green wall, a brown floor and soft lightning, a table and some chairs inside. All of those are controlled by a computer.

2. The green wall is made of trees. The leaves of those trees provided the room with much-needed oxygen.

Step 4: Post-reading

Task 1: Fill in the blanks about the summary of the passage.

Task 3: Discussion

1. What kind of problems is the earth facing now? What should we do to make our world more beautiful ?

The problems the earth is facing now:

water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, white pollution, overpopulation, water loss and soil erosion (水土流失), desertification (荒漠化), resource exhaustion (资源枯竭), global warming, acid rain(酸雨), lack of enough drinking water, etc.

Advice:

1. Plant more trees, protect rain forests and stop people from cutting them.

2. Use paper bags instead of plastic bags.

3. Don’t use disposal chopsticks.

4. Go to work/school on foot or by bike.

5. We should not throw rubbish everywhere. Throw cans, bottles, paper and plastic into the dustbin.

6. We need to recycle, reduce and reuse things.

7. We should never forget to turn off the lights when we leave our classrooms.
